The tank holds wastewater long enough for this separation and bacterial breakdown to happen. Once that’s done, the treated efluent (the middle layer) flows out through the outlet pipe and heads to your field line, also called the drain field, for the final stage of treatment.
What Happens After the Tank
The drain field is where the real filtering happens. Efluent from the tank slowly moves through perforated pipes buried in gravel trenches, and from there it percolates down into the soil.
Here’s where North Georgia’s soil actually matters a lot. Our red clay drains slower than sandy soil, so drain fields around here are often sized larger, or built with an alternative design, to make sure the water has enough room and time to filter properly instead of pooling near the surface. This is a big part of why a proper septic bed installation matters so much from day one.
Bacteria play a role here too, just a different kind. Inside the tank, anaerobic bacteria (the kind that work without oxygen) do most of the breakdown. Once efluent reaches the drain field, aerobic bacteria in the soil take over, finishing off the treatment and helping eliminate harmful organisms before the water rejoins the natural water cycle.

- Slow drains or gurgling pipes usually start with fixtures closest to the tank.

- Soggy ground or unusually green grass over the drain field, which usually means efluent is surfacing instead of filtering through properly
- Standing water anywhere near the tank or field lines
